October 2009 The Community Resource Council is a non profit agency, a crisis intervention center which for the past 85 years has been tackling challenges facing Bergen County residents who don't have anywhere else to turn.

Tito Santana's daughter Emily needed life saving surgery and he was turned away by his insurance carrier.  He had to use a network approved doctor who would agree to accept a set fee for the procedure.  Only a handful of neurosurgeons on the East Coast are skilled enough to even attempt the surgery and the father wanted the very best to operate on his four year old. Horizon said no.  Once, twice three times.  Finally, just as he was losing all hope, he called Diana DiGirolamo and begged for help to fight the insurance Goliath.  Diana knew that there was an appeal process and immediately served notice on Horizon, the State of New Jersey and even Medicare.  Level upon level of authority passed on helping the little girl and argued that the surgery could be done by a local network doctor.  No network doctor would agree to undertake the complicated and dangerous procedure, so Attorney Chris DiGirolamo filed notice on Horizon that since no network doctor was willing or able to do the surgical procedure, Horizon had not choice but to allow the physician of choice to go forward, and any further delay would potentially risk the young girl's life and Horizon would be held accountable.
