7 Million Vehicles Recalled Due to Airbag Defect

Defective Takata airbags have spurred the recall of over 7 million vehicles, including Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors models.

In the affected vehicles, the Takata air bag’s inflator mechanism can rupture, spraying the passengers with metal fragments. To date, the defective air bags have caused at least four deaths. The air bags are manufactured by Taka Corporation, a Japanese maker of auto safety components.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued its latest Takata-related recall in late October. The investigations and associated recalls have spanned more than 18 months.

“Responding to these recalls, whether old or new, is essential to personal safety and it will help aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman in a news release. “However, we’re leaving no stone unturned in our aggressive pursuit to track down the full geographic scope of this issue.”

Owners of the recalled vehicles are urged to take them to the dealer immediately for replacement. The recall list, which continues to grow, currently includes:
