Founded in the late 1940s and incorporated in 1976, the New Jersey Association for Justice (NJAJ) is headquartered in Trenton, New Jersey. NJAJ is a statewide association of over 2,700 members in private practice and public service, paralegals, law clerks, law students, and law school graduates not yet admitted to the bar. NJAJ is dedicated to protecting New Jersey’s families by working to preserve and strengthen the laws for safer products and workplaces, a cleaner environment and quality health care.

In 1989, Michael Maggiano was voted President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, New Jersey Affiliate. With a vision for the association to advocate for the rights of so many injury victims without a voice in Trenton, Mr. Maggiano raised funds to move the association offices to State Street in Trenton, appoint a full-time lobbyist and create one of the most influential consumer advocate groups in the state through NJAJ PAC.

Over the years, Mr. Maggiano has testified and advocated in both assembly and senate hearings on legislation impacting on the rights of consumers and the injured. Mr. Maggiano has been active over the years on national issues, as well as a staunch supporter of the American Association for Justice Leaders Forum. The American Association for Justice’s (AAJ) Leaders Forum is a dynamic group of member firms that help the AAJ fulfill its mission every day. Leaders Forum firms support the AAJ’s work to protect the civil justice system by providing the resources necessary to inform the public and educate members of Congress on dozens of issues crucial to individuals and families, such as forced arbitration, limits on justice for devastating and debilitating injuries, medical negligence, inadequate insurance minimums, environmental toxins, and accountability for dangerous and deadly products.

The AAJ Leaders Forum level of support is vital to the American Association for Justice. The commitment of such firms as Maggiano, DiGirolamo & Lizzi means that the association can pursue its vibrant and effective efforts to protect the civil justice system.

The association established the Leaders Forum more than a decade ago to ensure that every person has access to justice, even when up against the most powerful corporate interests. Leaders Forum firms such as Maggiano, DiGirolamo & Lizzi PC make a difference, enabling the association to communicate its message of accountability and protect every American’s right to the Seventh Amendment.

Mr. Maggiano has spoken throughout the United States for the rights of injury victims who, without such a voice, would never be heard in Congress or the Halls of Justice.

“Best Lawyers in America” Recognition & Honor

NJAJ Leadership Award

Thirty-one years ago, Michael Maggiano saw a growing surge of anti-consumer legislation mounting in the senate and assembly of New Jersey by self-interested power groups headed by Corporate America and the Insurance and Pharmaceutical Industries. This legislation was designed to dismantle the basic right to trial by jury and to litigate personal injury claims.

Mr. Maggiano worked to bring together a group of dedicated legal advocates who founded the New Jersey Association for Justice (NJAJ) Political Action Committee (PAC). For 30 years, this PAC has helped the NJAJ advocate to protect the legal rights of consumers.

In 2017, Mr. Maggiano was honored by the NJAJ for his generous contributions of time, as well as his leadership, talent, and resources. Most importantly, he was recognized for inspiring the NJAJ to always fight for the good of JUSTICE FOR ALL.

NJAJ Leadership Award

National Board of Trial Advocacy

Michael Maggiano is not only a Certified Civil Trial Attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, but also by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. This is a highly sought-after title by lawyers because few are. This is an extremely special opportunity because a National Board Certified Attorney has consistently demonstrated skill and expertise in their field and has proven their skill through rigorous testing by the NBTA. Many lawyers specialize in a specific type of law based on their reputation, but Maggiano is one of the few who has been certified in his field, which shows a dedication toward his job and your case.

NBTA Certified

There are many professions where the body of knowledge is so large that it is impossible to know everything about a certain topic. The same can be said about the body of law, where many complex topics have been introduced in the workplace. Being NBTA certified proves that there is truth in what you advertise. Michael Maggiano specializes in personal injury cases and promises you the utmost of care and time in your case.

Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers

The American College of Trial Lawyers is recognized as the preeminent organization of trial lawyers in North America, dedicated to maintaining and improving the standards of trial practice, professionalism, ethics and the administration of justice.

Founded in 1950 as an organization to recognize the very best of the courtroom bar, the College has never limited the term “trial lawyers.” Its membership is composed of civil lawyers from both sides of the aisle, criminal lawyers, public interest lawyers, state and federal prosecutors, and public defenders. The primary constant is that Fellows of the College must have proven themselves in actual trial practice.

There is an intensive vetting process to assure this. Membership is by invitation only, to persons who have distinguished themselves in trial practice for at least 15 years and who are recognized leaders in their local communities. The College looks for lawyers who are considered by other lawyers and judges to be the best in their states or provinces, lawyers whose ethical and moral standards are the highest, and lawyers who share the intangible quality of collegiality.

The College is the only organization in which all Justices of the United States Supreme Court and all Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada are honorary members. The College is privileged to be able to make this statement because every Justice has elected to accept Honorary Fellowship in the College and to address the College at one of its national meetings. The Past Presidents of the College include some outstanding lawyers, including former Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell and former U.S. Attorney Griffin Bell.

From its founding in 1950 through today, the three-fold mission of the College has been to maintain and improve:

  • The standards of trial practice;
  • The administration of justice; and
  • The ethics of the profession.

Michael Maggiano is honored to have been invited to be a member (or Fellow) of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers

2015 Bergen’s Top Lawyers Distinction

In June 2015, (201) Magazine published an article in their magazine that featured a segment known as Bergen’s Top Lawyers, a peer-review survey focusing on some of the greatest lawyers in all of Bergen County. Michael Maggiano was presented with the Bergen’s Top Lawyer Award. Attorneys in Bergen were contacted and asked whom they would recommend in the country and in the given area of law. The survey was conducted by Professional Research Services (PRS) of Royal Oak, Michigan. After all, attorneys were contacted by PRS, an online ballot was constructed and each attorney was invited to recommend up to three colleagues in each given legal specialty. After nominations were complete, each nominee was carefully evaluated based on the survey results. Things taken into consideration were the legitimacy of their practicing license and their current standing with the State Bar Association of New Jersey. In the area of Personal Injury lawyers, Michael Maggiano was chosen as a winner for recognition! Maggiano commented on the recognition:

“This is quite an honor for me. The fact that (201) Magazine included me in its selection of Bergen’s Top Lawyers signals that my constant effort to deliver excellent work has paid off. It is gratifying to be recognized in this way.”

Maggiano argued that the surgery carried substantial risks and was not necessary as the patient would have been served well with an insulin pump and avoided the risks and injury suffered.

$2,000,000 • Medical Negligence …to a young man who in his senior year of high school football, after undergoing a surgical rod repair of a displaced tibia/fibular fracture, was the victim of medical negligence by the late diagnosis of a known complication of the surgery known as compartment syndrome, resulting in the loss of all tendons and muscle of his calf as well as osteomyelitis.

$500,000 • Medical Negligence …to the mother and father of an adult female daughter who died following a plane flight of a pulmonary embolism from taking of birth control pills prescribed even though her chart was red-flagged against birth control pills. We contended that this needless death, this loss of a young life was a family loss and the result of system errors brought about by failures in the system of the defendant’s medical practice due to simple management carelessness.
