Bariatric Fusion Recall
The Bariatric Fusion Company recalled bags of iron soft chews with Vitamin C due to failure to meet child-resistant closure requirement. These dietary supplements have packaging that is not child-resistant and senior friendly as required under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The chews inside contain iron, which can cause serious injuries and even death to young children if multiples are ingested. There have been about 800 units recalled.
The recall refers to 60-count bags of cherry flavored Soft Chews in a pink re-sealable bag. The bag has an image of cherries and a leaf on the front of the package. On the front are the words written: “Soft Chews Iron with Vitamin C”, “Cherry Flavor”, “Bariatric Fusion”, and “60 Soft Chews.” They have Lot number 14191C2 printed near the bottom of the back of the recalled bags. These products were sold at Bariatric Fusion distributors, drug stores, and medical wellness centers nationwide and online at BariatricFusion.com from September 2014 to February 2015 for $23.
So far, there have been no injuries reported; however, one should always take caution to a recall. Consumers should immediately place the product out of a child’s sight and reach, and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. (1)
Foods, Medicines, & Cosmetics
Santa Barbara Smokehouse
In a press release, Santa Barbara Smokehouse has voluntary recalled cold smoked salmon because of possible health risk to consumers. The salmon in question is from March 1st to April 8th 2015, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection can cause healthy people to get fevers, severe headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, and more. In pregnant women, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No illnesses have been reported to date but is always good to take caution when dealing with food items. Santa Barbara has tested and received certificates of analysis showing negative results for products in question during the time period. The company recommends as a precautionary measure to pull frozen product produced on or before April 8, 2015. (2)
Passenger Front Air Bag Inflators
Mazda Manufacturer recalled 27,149 units on June 4 due to passenger side frontal sir bags that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion, which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon deployment. Mazda North American Operations has recalled certain model year 2004-2006 Mazda B-series light trucks manufactured from April 17, 2003, through May 2, 2006. This is highly dangerous and concerning because, in the event of a crash that causes the deployment of the passenger’s frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants. This could potentially lead to serious injury or death.
Mazda is remedying the situation by notifying owners, and then the dealers will replace the passenger side frontal air bag inflators free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of July 2015. Owners can contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. (3)
