In 2015, the number of pedestrian fatalities jumped by an astounding 10%, which is the largest jump yet in fatality reports. Between January and June of 2015, an alarming 2,368 people who were on foot were killed in traffic crash events. Richard Retting, who helped author the study, said about the matter, “Pedestrian safety is clearly a growing problem across the country. It is important to understand the data underlying these crashes so states and localities can apply the right mix of engineering, education and enforcement to counteract this troubling trend.” And that’s just it – prevention and taking proper precautions will end this fatal trend.
Because of the increase in the past year, pedestrians now account for approximately 15% of all motor vehicle crash-related deaths. There are a number of reasons why this is happening all across the country. Some of the reasons include an increase in motor vehicle travel, the growing use of cellphones as a distraction, susceptibility of pedestrians, and an increase in the number of Americans walking for health or economic reasons. Many of the accidents also occur when it is dark outside or when either the pedestrian or driver was drinking. In the study conducted from January to June, there were 73 deaths in New Jersey.
