Recent Food Recalls

There are many reasons why a recall may be initiated for food items. Some of these reasons include the discovery of an organism in a product, discovery of an allergen, or a mislabeling or misbranding of food. Any item that can make a consumer sick is known as a defective item and can be pulled from shelves. A manufacturer or distributor is usually in charge of initiating the recall and taking the foods from markets; however, sometimes these requests are made by government agencies like the USDA or FDA.

Allergy Alert Issued For Pecan Clusters
On November 13, 2015, Virginia Diner, Inc. recalled 10 oz. cans of Happy Holidays Pecan Turtledoves Chocolate Caramel Pecan Clusters Candy at a location in Wakefield, VA. The reason? These candies may contain peanuts and peanut allergens. Therefore, people who have a peanut allergy or sensitivity run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they happen to consume these products. The problem was discovered when a consumer received and opened a Pecan Turtledove can and found Peanut Turtledoves within. The label reads “Happy Holidays Pecan Turtledoves Chocolate Caramel Pecan Clusters” and the listed Lot Code is 092915 PNT.

These candies were sold and distributed through fundraising organizations between September 30, 2015 and November 5, 2015. The products were delivered to end buyers who purchased the products on a form through a seller. As of right now, Virginia Diner is contacting affected groups and costumers who may have received the product. If you happened to purchase this product, you are supposed to return it to the organization from which it was purchased for a replacement. The Virginia Diner is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in administering the voluntary recall. However, to date, they have not received any reports or illness or injury to date.

Apricot and Poppy Seed Logs Recalled
On November 12, 2015, Market District recalled Apricot and Poppyseed Logs prepared and sold individually from the bakery department inside Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets. The sell dates on these products were November 7, 2015 through November 17, 2015. They have been recalled due to an undeclared milk allergen. That means that consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the products. If you do not have milk allergies, then the product is safe to use.

There were approximately 460 potentially affected Apricot and Poppyseed Logs purchased in various transactions in supermarkets in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland. There have been no reported illnesses to date for the recalled product.
There has been a code of 219772 509998 on the Apricot Log and 219773 509997 on the Poppyseed Log.

SpaghettiOs Recalled Due to Choking Hazard
On November 12, 2015, Campbell Soup Company voluntarily recalled 14.2 ounce cans of SpaghettiOs Original due to a potential choking hazard posed by pieces of red plastic that can be found in a small number of cans. Parts of the can lining can peel off and become lost in the soup. The product has a date of February 22, 2017 and a UPC code of 51000 22432. The recall affects 355,000 cans and is limited to the United States.
