Tragic death of tow truck driver & his wife while responding to crash in Jackson Township, NJ

On the evening of Tuesday, November 19, a 70 yr old tow truck driver and his 62 year old wife were on their way to respond to the scene of another accident in Jackson Township, Ocean County.

According to police, Robert Johnson & his wife Shirley were in their flatbed truck when for some unknown reason the the truck ran though a stop sign, crashed into a tree, and burst into flames. The couple were trapped inside the tow truck and despite the efforts of several good Samaritans who tried to extinguish the flames, they died at the scene.

The Johnson’s had operated BJ towing for decades in Jackson Township, New Jersey. Not only were their trucks a familiar presence in Ocean County, but the couple were also well known figures and respected members of the community.

The crash remains under investigation.
