Fireworks Facts This Fourth of July

fireworks-statistics

Each year, many people are injured by fireworks and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has been researching this data heavily over the past few years to take steps toward prevention. Fireworks injuries can always be prevented by following safety steps that we have provided to you today.

The reality of the situation is that far too many people will become injured and land in emergency rooms due to the unsightly accidents caused by something meant to bring fun and joy. In fact, the CPSC found that in 2013 alone, there were right deaths and approximately 11,400 consumer injuries. In 2012, there were many less at 8,700 which shows that the numbers have only been steadily rising. Year-round, CPSC will take the necessary steps to help prevent these accidents whether from legal or illegal fireworks.

Types of Fireworks and Injuries

There are many fireworks that you may be familiar with, but did you know the dangers they may pose? Now you can find out.

Sparklers: Sparklers are very common amongst children at Fourth of July picnics. However, parents usually don’t understand that they burn at around 2,000 degrees, which is hot enough to melt some metals. This is why children should never handle these products.

Bottle Rockets: These rockets are attached to a stick and are lit by a fuse. However, some teenagers have been known to get out of hand and use them the wrong way, as in firing them at one another. This has lead to many chest, head, and eye injuries.

Firecrackers: These tiny fireworks explode on the ground once lit. However, they are notorious for causing burns and other serious injuries.

Roman Candles: These contain exploding shells but are held in the user’s hand. Children have lost fingers as well as sustained severe burns and other injuries from these fireworks.
